  • SLS finishes 5th year of trading on a total high!

We can’t believe we’re into September already…where has the year gone? As August 2023 came to an end, so did our 5th year of trading and we’re delighted with how far we have come in such a short and challenging time. With the covid era, rise of living cost crisis, the writer’s strikes, and soaring fuel costs, it’s a tough climate out there but we have still managed to finish our fifth year with our highest turnover yet. We have worked with some fantastic productions this year and Tim was very glad to be back working on Shetland S8 with Ashley Jensen as the new lead (can’t wait). Tim was also the location manager for Payback, an exciting new TV drama starring Morven Christie which was another big contract for SLS in 2022. We were delighted to provide location services for their shoot and we’re really looking forward to watching it when it comes to the big screen. As usual, we’ve got so many interesting and amazing projects to shout about, quite a few of which were shot in some very remote locations. Several of these productions were commercials, for which we provided multiple services saving them a great deal of time and resources. We sent a motorhome pulling a trailer loaded with kit for an Italian clothing commercial to Torridon marshes, North of Skye. A splitter van and location kit went to an SSPCA advert filming in Fife. Toilets, a large amount of location kit and trackway boards were provided or a channel 4 advert filming around Glasgow. We supplied security guards, filming signage and kit hire for a British Airway s advert. And we sourced a splitter van with a driver for an MTP commercial as well as a large amount of locations kit. The reality tv show from MTV, Teen Mom, also got in touch looking for security guards to watch over some of their Teen Mom contestants who were wild camping for an episode in a remote location. In an addition to our supplier base, this year, we started working with an industry leading Health and Safety Advisor which is another service we now offer. Using our new advisor, we provided risk assessments for Annika 2. We also sent a water safety expert to Torridon Marshes and a crew nurse to another commercial shoot. We’ve added several great filming locations to our locations library and helped various productions find suitable locations for still shoots. We had a tough location to find for a bit of a controversial brand activation campaign which was highlighting the damage that dairy farming is having on the environment. They wanted to find a location around Aberdeen which is one of the biggest dairy farming areas in Scotland. And we also helped a piano player who wanted a beautiful Scottish location for the background to his music video on the Isle of Skye. As we enter our sixth year of trading, we continue to seek the top suppliers in Scotland to provide the best possible service we can; we are continually building our location library with new and exciting film friendly locations; we continue to make ourselves available around the clock to accommodate filming hours. In addition, we are delighted to announce that we have added a large, luxury motorhome to our fleet of v ehicles. This offers two spacious seating areas for production and/or green room, changing space and space for hair and makeup. We have also added a van to our fleet to be able to complete more deliveries. We have had phenomenal support from our customers and suppliers this year, for which we cannot be more thankful, and we are excited to see what this coming year brings. Please contact us today to find out how we can support your upcoming project. 07809254670 www.scottishlocationservices.com

  • Motorhome Mad!

With strict social distancing measures to adhere to, we have had an exceptionally busy year for motorhome hire. We source motorhomes and campervans of a variety of different sizes which can be used as greenroom space for cast and crew on your shoot. We have been sending motorhomes and campervans to some very remote, hard to reach places and can provide them for any number of weeks. We work with experienced and friendly drivers who can manoeuvre the vehicles into some tight spaces, adhere to COVID measures, work the required hours, and understand the industry inside out. You can rest assured that our strict health and safety system vets our suppliers to ensure all vehicles have undergone their safety checks and are fully insured. We have had the privilege of providing motorhomes and attendants for some fantastic productions over the past year. Many of these productions have required multiple hires with drivers and attendants at short notice and we never fail to meet their expectations. We sent 12 motorhomes to the Isle of Gigha for a 6 week hire for STV and made sure they were replenished with gas as and when they needed it despite there being a national gas shortage. We coordinated a complex transport schedule for multiple hires at various locations with attendants and drivers for VIGIL. We provided The Rig with 11 motorhomes at short notice over the course of a week at Leith Docks. Princess Mirror-Belle required multiple motorhomes over their 4 month shoot and we made sure they had a full water tank at all times for their cast to have a shower in-between takes. The Lost King required 3 luxury motorhomes with showers for their shoot in Edinburgh and then further hires with attendants on various other shoot days. We provided a motorhome with an attendant and packed it full of the location kit that the production required for a day’s still shoot on the Isle of Skye which saved them a great deal on transport costs. There are so many different motorhome hires to shout about this year and other productions that made use of our services include; Karen Pirie, Screw, Shetland S6 & S7, Guilt S2, Molly and Mack and NM Productions and we hope to continue providing this great service this year too. One of the biggest benefits to using us for motorhome hire is that we work with many different pre-vetted suppliers to ensure that we have a big bank of motorhomes to provide large scale shoots. We make sure that our suppliers understand the industry well and will provide the best service at the best rate. We have a database of experienced drivers and attendants to call upon to accommodate productions that require multiple drivers for their vehicles and we are experienced in coordinating complex transport schedules. We are a one-stop shop for location services so many of our clients have saved a great deal of money on transport, hiring motorhomes and various other location kits through us.

  • SLS finishes end of 3rd year on a high!

As August drew to a close, we celebrated our third official year of trading and what a year it was! Despite the very turbulent and unstable times we’re delighted to report that we finished our financial year with more than double the turnover of the previous year, which means 2020/2021 is our best trading year to date. Since we emerged from the first 2020 lockdown, the Scottish Screen industry has been booming with some phenomenal productions being filmed here over the past year. Glasgow in particular has become a filming metropolis housing large scale features such as Batman, Flash and Indiana Jones with more on the horizon like Batgirl and Good Omens 2. We had the privilege of working on 34 contracts this year and some of our highlights include big features such as; Starwars -Pilgrim, Flash, Disney, The Lost King and My Son, along with high end TV dramas; The Rig, VIGIL, Screw, Shetland S6 & S7, Guilt S2, Crime and Karen Pirrie. We continued to work for Children’s BBC on Princess Mirror-Belle and Molly and Mack, we supplied kit for commercials including Aviva, Remembrance day and Vodaphone and some fantastic independent shorts including Lady Baby, Pram Snatcher and Groom. Due to social distancing measures over the past year we have seen a sharp rise in motorhome hire for use as cast greenrooms. We have coordinated many complex hires with drivers and attendants for some large scale jobs, many at short notice, in various different locations. This includes providing and coordinating 12 motorhomes for a 6 week STV shoot on the Isle of Gigha, a total of 11 motorhomes over 3 days at Leith Docks for The Rig, a variety of motorhomes and campervans over 2 weeks for Screw, multiple motorhome hire over a month for Karen Pirrie and coordinating a busy transport schedule with multiple drivers and motorhomes for VIGIL. We continue to save our clients time and money by sourcing services from the most reliable, experienced suppliers at the best rates and will continue to do so this year too. We're extremely proud of our consistent 5-Star Google reviews which is testament to the work we are doing for our clients. If you find yourself tied up coordinating a busy shoot and require any location service like; kit hire, greenrooms, security, marquee hire, traffic management, Quad and trailer hire, diesel refills, gullysucking or other waste water services, COVID attendants, or any other location service! Let us take the pressure off. You can call us any day, any time and we will make sure you get what you need when you need it!

  • Our useful guide for Location Scouting in Scotland

Looking for a location in Scotland? With such a variety of mountains, coastlines, wildernesses, cities, villages, historic and modern locations to choose from, you are sure to find the perfect one. The best place to start is to hire an experienced Location Scout and there is plenty of help out there to assist you in sourcing one. We have a database full of experienced Location Scouts and Managers across Scotland and we can send you a list of available scouts if you email us at scottishlocationservices@gmail.com. Each film commission office also has a list of local location scouts. You can find information on screen commission local offices here: https://www.screen.scot/film-in-scotland/screen-commission/local-offices. Other resources include www.filmbang.com, productionbase.co.uk and www.screen.scot. Below, we have laid out a useful guide for scouting in Scotland which is taken from our own Location Scout and Director, Tim Maskell. First, receive the brief and where applicable do a full location breakdown of the script to determine how many locations there are, what types of locations and specific briefs for each location. Start with what you already know, i.e. municipal buildings, country estates, etc. Use your experience and any relevant previous scouting you may have done that could be relevant to put forward locations that may work, ideally locations that haven’t been used before although repeat ones can also work if they are a specific match to the brief. In the first instance, the idea is to focus the mind and make sure you are on the same page as the director and designer and what they see the location brief as. Once you have a couple of options and the brief is ‘locked’ in you can expand the search to try to find the perfect location. Ideally at least 2 or 3 really good ones to choose from. Below are some tips on how to best scout for locations: Consider where your production is going to be based and how far you are willing to travel. The good news is that Scotland isn’t that big so you can get from a bustling city to the rugged highlands in most cases within a short drive. In Scotland you also tend to get a vast variety of scenery and architecture no matter where you are that can be adapted to fit your desired location. Once you have determined your search radius, start with the local film commission for that area/areas. There are 20 film commission offices/officers in Scotland who are there to help you find locations in their areas. They all hold a location library full of film friendly locations. Here is the link again: https://www.screen.scot/film-in-scotland/screen-commission/local-offices. Bounce ideas off other Location Managers and Scouts. Scotland has an excellent, and experienced network of locations crew. Use an OS map to locate remote locations such as farms, cottages, lochs, rivers, forests etc. Make use of free online resources such as Rightmove for residential properties. This at the least can help you focus your search in specific areas, i.e. you might not find what you need on Rightmove (and often want to avoid places that are on the market anyway) but you might find a specific style of house or street which you can then explore further to find the right location. With regards to residential properties, letter drops are generally the way forward when it comes to gauging interest and increasing the number of options available to you. Other useful contacts depending on your exact location brief include local councils, Historic Scotland, real estate agents, building firms, architects etc etc. Visit Scotland lists historic and modern locations, particularly tourist attractions. They even include a list of ‘film location tours’ including Harry Potter, Mary Queen of Scots, Outlander and many more. Large Estates such as Ardgowan, Ardkinglas and Abercairny Estate can have many different types of properties on their estates including hunting lodges, cottages, stables and farms. People who own a lot of land or a lot of properties can be a handy resource. When searching for a location you must have consideration to how it can be facilitated and its potential to affect other departments. Not only does the crew need to get there, and be able to work safely, but things like noise pollution can be an issue for the sound department or what floor you're filming on could be an issue for lighting. Once a desirable location has been found you then need to contact the owner to determine if they are open to filming and if they can accommodate the filming schedule. This is why it is always good practice to source as many leads for each location as possible to ensure there are backup options should one not work out. We hope that this guide gives you a good insight into location scouting in Scotland and assists you in your quest to find your perfect location. Please do get in touch with us if you would like us to help you source a scout or search our location library for some leads.
